Over the years, I have served on provincial, regional, and local committees/organizations, as well as town council. If there is one thing I learned, it is that if you want to move your community or organisation forward into the future, you must have a goal and a plan. Goals keep an organisation focused on its operations and how they can be enhanced as it moves into the future. Planning is required to provide the steps or roadmap that will assist an organisation in achieving its objectives.
Without goals, organisations tend to focus solely on the present, missing opportunities to improve or grow. Staying focused on the present will also ensure that the status quo lasts as long as possible until circumstances force a change. Eventually, when change is necessary attempts to adapt will cause significant stress in, an unprepared organization . Organizations without goals or plans will be slow to adapt to change and ultimately fail to realize their full potential.
When an organization's goals are oriented toward the future, it helps to keep committee members engaged and actively looking for ways to improve the organisation. Nothing remains the same forever, and goals provide organisations with the opportunity to control their future.
