As Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe prepares for his next trip to Washington, D.C. and Mexico, the emphasis is firmly on improving trade relations and maintaining the prosperity of both Canada and its important international partners. This mission has great promise for improving economic partnership and tackling critical issues affecting businesses and people on both sides of the border.
A Strategic Visit to Washington, D.C.
Premier Moe's itinerary in Washington, D.C. includes meetings with U.S. elected representatives and industry organizations. As part of the Premier's Council of the Federation (COF) joint-mission, he aims to strengthen the enduring trade partnership between Canada and the United States. With an impressive $40 billion worth of imports and exports crossing the border annually, the U.S. stands as Saskatchewan's largest and most crucial trading partner.
"It's important in the current economic environment that we engage with our counterparts in the United States to emphasize the shared benefit of trade between our two countries and turn the conversation toward building on those strengths rather than jeopardizing them with tariffs," Premier Moe emphasized.
During these meetings, Premier Moe will emphasize Saskatchewan's critical role in ensuring energy and food security to the continent. The Premier's conversations will center on preserving strong Canada-United States relations by addressing common problems such as the economy, energy, supply chains, and the potential effects of planned tariffs.
Securing the Border
Premier Moe will push for more robust measures to secure the Canada-U.S. border in addition to trade talks.
"Strengthening border security and preventing the flow of illicit drugs like Fentanyl is a concern that has been identified by the U.S. and one that I share," Moe added.
Saskatchewan's proactive Border Security Plan aims to ensure increased law enforcement presence along the Saskatchewan-U.S. border.
Unified Voice for Free Trade
The COF joint mission, scheduled for February 12, will bring together all thirteen premiers to convey a unified message on the necessity of free trade. This collaborative initiative seeks to illustrate the considerable benefits that tariff-free trade provides to both Canada and the United States, while also addressing concerns about the negative consequences of tariffs on consumers and businesses.
Expanding Horizons in Mexico
Following the Washington mission, Premier Moe will visit Mexico to meet with business executives and elected officials. This visit is part of Saskatchewan's overall aim to strengthen partnerships with Mexico, an important trading partner. These interactions will emphasize the province's position as a global supplier of food and energy security.
Premier Moe and other cabinet ministers will continue their diplomatic efforts in Canada and abroad in the coming weeks, fighting for Saskatchewan's interests on a global scale. These efforts seek to enhance partnerships with foreign partners and establish Saskatchewan as an important contributor to global food and energy security.
Premier Moe's diplomatic journey demonstrates the province's commitment to strengthening international trade connections and addressing crucial issues affecting our shared economic success. Saskatchewan is well-positioned to maintain its position as a significant player in global commerce by capitalizing on current strengths and creating new collaborations.
