An extreme cold warning has been issued by Environment Canada for the R.M. of Gull Lake, including Gull Lake and Tompkins. Southern Saskatchewan is experiencing an exceptional cold event, with wind chills dropping to - 40 or even lower at times.

While the cold winds might lessen a bit during the daytime, they are expected to come back strongly overnight. The freezing temperatures will persist throughout the weekend and into the beginning of next week. However, relief is expected as temperatures are predicted to drop by Thursday, with a significant warm-up beginning on Friday.

Everyone is at risk.

Extreme cold is dangerous to everyone, although certain populations are especially vulnerable, including:

  • Young children.

  • Older adults.

  • People with chronic illnesses.

  • Those working or exercising outside.

  • People without enough shelter.

How to Stay Safe

Dress warmly, with layers that can be removed if you become too warm. Ensure that the outer layer is wind resistant.

Cover Up: Frostbite can develop on exposed skin in minutes, especially with wind chill. Keep all skin covered.

Consider Pets: If it's too cold for you to stay outside, your pet will be too.

Understanding The Warning

Extreme cold warnings are issued when temperatures or wind chills represent an increased risk of health problems such as frostbite and hypothermia. Stay educated, prepared, and safe throughout this protracted extreme cold event. Remember: safety first!
