How Will Saskatchewan Businesses Navigate the Impact of U.S.-China Tariffs?

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe hosted a business roundtable in Saskatoon today for companies most affected by U.S.-China tariffs. Alongside him, Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding and Agricultural Minister Daryl Harrison consulted with potash, critical minerals, energy, manufacturing, agriculture, and forestry industries.

Premier Moe is concerned that tariffs will hurt Saskatchewan's economy and hinder product competitiveness. "Our companies bear the brunt of these impacts, which is why I am committed to standing up for Saskatchewan's interests, focusing on calm and sensible solutions," he said. He called for federal-provincial collaboration to respond strongly.

China will impose 100% tariffs on canola oil, meal, and pea imports and 25% taxes on pork and aquatic products starting March 20, 2025. All Canadian goods are subject to a 25% U.S. duty; however, energy is only 10%. The measures will harm all three economies and raise prices for millions of consumers.

Since November 2024, Saskatchewan has actively addressed these issues at the provincial, national, and international levels. Premier Moe said, "We will continue to reach out to our contacts across Canada, the U.S., and China to advocate for Saskatchewan's interests."

Saskatchewan's top trading partner is the U.S., with $40 billion in commodities crossing annually, followed by China. Saskatchewan exported $3.7 billion in agri-food to China in 2024, 38% of Canada's total.

Saskatchewan is known for its free trade and 160-country exports. Nine overseas trade offices have helped the province diversify its markets and minimize its dependence on America. Saskatchewan will continue to support its international trade strategy with its global reputation for sustainable food and energy.
