Key Decisions from Gull Lake Town Council February 26th Meeting: Elks Hall Renovations and Old Pharmacy Updates!

The Gull Lake Town Council held its regular meeting on February 26, 2025, at the Town Council Chambers. Mayor Nasser Zanidean chaired the meeting, joined by Councillors Tyson Migneault, Karen Turton, Brandon Wessner, Steve Haithwaite, Terry Stevenson, Neal Boutin, and Administrator Dawnette Peterson, confirming a quorum for the meeting.


Meeting Minutes and Financial Approvals

The meeting commenced at 7:00 p.m., during which the council approved the minutes from the February 12, 2025, meeting. Financial discussions followed, with the approval of payments totaling $68,961.26 in cheques and $3,000 in payroll EFTs.


Staff and Committee Reports

Staff presentations included the Waterplant and Maintenance Department’s updates on January 2025 operations. Economic Development Officer L. Alliban submitted a written February report for council review. Councillor committee reports covered key areas such as fire services, emergency management, healthcare, and ambulance operations.

  • SWTPC: Meeting minutes from January 24, 2025, and notice of the upcoming February 28 meeting.

  • SPRA: Details regarding the 2025 Communities In Bloom initiative.

  • RCMP: A report from S/Sgt R. Blais on ATM theft investigations.

  • Federated Cooperatives Ltd.: Environmental assessment results.


Key Decisions Made During the Meeting

  • Elks Hall Renovations: The council approved Laverdiere Builders' proposal for ceiling finishing, wall painting, trim updates, and electrical work at the Elks Hall.

  • Highway 37 Maintenance: Authorization was given for a minor contract with the Ministry of Highways for winter road maintenance on Highway 37.

  • Property Transfer and Notice of Intention for Heritage Designation: The council approved the transfer of the old Pharmacy located at the corner of Main Street and Proton Avenue to the Gull Lake Property Development Cooperative. The Cooperative was formed to promote local investment, facilitate business attraction, and support real estate development in Gull Lake. A Notice of Intention was also issued to designate the property as municipal heritage property, recognizing its historical, cultural, or architectural significance to the community. This designation aims to preserve the site and ensure its legacy for future generations.

  • Bike Rodeo Event: Plans were finalized for the Bike Rodeo event on May 15, 2025, including the temporary closure of Lake Avenue.

  • Administrative Updates: Cheques and negotiable instruments will now require the signature of the Administrator, alongside either the Mayor or Deputy Mayor.

  • Recreation Complex Development: The council approved a building permit application submitted by the Gull Lake Recreation Complex, subject to the conditions outlined in the Plan Examination Report provided by Municode Services Ltd.
