A Year of Recognition and Achievement
The year began with a major accomplishment for our town and neighboring municipalities (RM of Gull Lake, RM of Carmichael, and RM of Webb) as the Gull Lake and Rural Regional Alliance received the Marketing & Communication Award from the Saskatchewan Economic Development Alliance for their Invest Gull Lake website. This accolade showcased the Gull Lake region, underlining our strategic location, community spirit, and crucial information about our area to draw potential investors and residents.
Community Spirit and Leadership in Gull Lake
February welcomed the much-loved Whitecap Winterfest event at Gull Lake, attracting both locals and visitors. Sponsored by Whitecap Resources and fueled by the commitment of our amazing volunteers, this festive annual event has a range of activities and entertainment for children of all ages. The dedication and enthusiasm of the volunteers were crucial to the success of Winterfest, highlighting Gull Lake's lively community spirit.
The community witnessed the generosity of Fast Trucking and Glenn Metz, who made a significant donation of 4-H beef to the Autumn House Independent Living Facility. Their contribution underscores the spirit of generosity that sets Gull Lake apart as a giving community.
A notable event that ran over several weeks was the 2024 Wiener Wednesday hosted by Incyte Environmental Services, which successfully raised $2,800 for several community organizations.
The Kinette Club of Gull Lake arranged a variety of impactful fundraising activities, motivating the community to support local projects and charities. Over the course of their 2023/2024 year, they succeeded in generating and donating a total of $12,511 through their fundraising activities.
The Gull Lake Community Markets had an excellent year filled with fun themed events, including the 'TRUNK SALE' and a special event for our Emergency Service Workers. The markets included community fundraisers, activities for kids, live music, and an expanding variety of vendors. These markets showcased Gull Lake's lively community spirit and enthusiasm.
The November municipal election resulted in changes in local governance as the Gull Lake Town Council welcomed new members. The newly elected councillors will bring new ideas and a renewed dedication to making the town better. You may read more about the newly appointed council members here.
Business Developments and Fresh Starts
With the arrival of spring, the new SARCAN Recycling Depot opened its doors at a new location. This facility has enhanced the accessibility of recycling, motivating residents to participate in recycling to help keep our environment sustainable.
The summer months were filled with energy as the Go-Fer Hole experienced management changes, unveiling an expanded menu and longer hours. Both locals and visitors enjoyed the delightful fast food, including tasty hamburgers and other hot foods, along with ice cream treats.
The Hitching Post Restaurant has opened its doors, providing a delicious dining experience. It's open for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Have a good cup of coffee with a slice of homemade pie, or relish a tasty home-cooked meal.
The Gull Lake Lodge Motel has undergone a change in ownership and substantial renovations, which are set to improve guest experiences and contribute positively to local tourism. The new management has focused on modernizing the facilities and enhancing guest amenities, ensuring a comfortable and memorable stay for visitors.
Enhancing Community Health
Gull Lake EMS unveiled details on the new Community Paramedicine Program. The program will provide a significant enhancement to healthcare services in Gull Lake. This initiative seeks to enhance healthcare accessibility and quality for the residents of Gull Lake, providing prompt medical support and preventive care.
Commemorating Achievements
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways made substantial improvements to Highway No. 37 in the town of Gull Lake by laying new pavement and adding concrete curbs and gutters. This crucial infrastructure project, which cost around 5.4 million dollars, significantly improved the highway's condition in Gull Lake.
On December 20, the Western Financial Group office bid farewell to Mike Valley by celebrating his retirement after 26 years with cake and coffee.
In December, local firefighter and paramedic Brian Walters took on the role of Training Coordinator for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Firefighters Association. His vast experience in emergency services and role as an instructor with the SVFA position him ideally to manage the training programs for volunteer firefighters across the province.
Autumn ushered in some good news as the Gull Lake Care Centre Auxillary hosted its inaugural online auction, achieving remarkable success in raising funds for a new soundbar and future projects that enhance the quality of life for the seniors at the Gull Lake Special Care Centre. This event showcased the community's spirit of generosity and collaboration.
In December, the exceptional generosity and support from the Gull Lake community propelled the Sponsor a Chair fundraiser to success. Thanks to the efforts of Autumn House Independent Living Facility, the fundraiser raised the $6,600 required to purchase new, comfortable dining chairs for residents. The community united, achieving the fundraising goal and guaranteeing that Autumn House continues to be a warm and inviting space for all its residents.
The Challenges and Triumphs of Winter
In December, a notable weather occurrence took place as a storm on the 18th delivered 25 cm of snow to Gull Lake. The town's rapid response was commendable. The collaborative work of the Town Crew, Rick Mitchell, Reg Orton, and Central Energy facilitated swift snow removal, maintaining clear roads, and ensuring the safety of our community.
Celebrating Restoration and New Beginnings
The SWT Lyceum Theatre underwent several exciting upgrades andrenovations. A brand new concession stand, a state-of-the-art popcorn machine, improved restroom facilities, and a charming classic-style SWT Lyceum Theatre sign have all been added to the theatre. These enhancements significantly elevate the experience for moviegoers and visitors, making each visit even more enjoyable and memorable.
This year, the Elks Hall's bathrooms were renovated, making the facility more comfortable and usable. Furthermore, the hall's roof and façade have undergone considerable modifications in recent years, ensuring that it remains a welcome and well-maintained community venue. This year brought an exciting new opportunity for our community! Located at 2461 Proton Ave., the historic Gull Lake Pharmacy is up for restoration, and Gull Lake Property Development reached out to the community for assistance. The goal of this renovation project is to make the facility more appealing for long-term tenants, retailers, and professionals. Work on the restoration has not yet begun, but in Phase 1 utilities, doors, windows, and fixtures will be restored to provide businesses with a clean slate.
