Premier Scott Moe addressed his concerns about the tariffs announced by President Trump on his Facebook page. Moe underscored the far-reaching implications of these tariffs, both for the United States and its trading partners, such as Saskatchewan.
"President Trump is just simply wrong when he says Canada has nothing the USA needs," Moe said. "American farmers need Canadian fuel and fertilizer to grow their crops," he said, emphasizing how important Saskatchewan is to the economy of North America. Moe said that these taxes would cause the prices of important resources like oil, potash, and uranium to go up, which would mean that American families would have to pay more for their groceries.
Moe said that the tariffs were "completely self-inflicted and unnecessary," pointing out that they could cause people in the U.S. to lose their jobs and put a strain on their finances. In addition, he called on Canada to take reasonable and prudent measures in order to prevent causing comparable damage to Canadian households and businesses.
Saskatchewan is being proactive, and the government of the province is carefully considering all of its choices. "Cabinet will meet tomorrow to consider all options," Moe stated, indicating a strategic and deliberate approach forward.
Going forward, Saskatchewan intends to lower interprovincial barriers and improve international trade relations. Moe said again that his government was committed to "promoting the construction of necessary infrastructure, like pipelines," which would help the economy grow. He also said that more steps would be announced in the coming days.
Premier Moe's speech is a good lesson of how economies are linked and how important it is to make good policy decisions. Saskatchewan's reaction to the U.S. tariffs shows that the province is committed to finding practical solutions that will protect its economy and encourage growth.
