Staying Strong: How Premier Scott Moe Plans to Protect Saskatchewan's Economy Amidst President Trump's Tariffs

Premier Scott Moe said today that he would take strong steps to protect Saskatchewan's economy and people in response to President Trump's tariffs, which he called a "direct attack on the Canadian economy." The Saskatchewan government has told the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) to stop buying alcohol made in the US and instead buy from Canadian companies for all government purchases. This bold move is meant to cut down on or get rid of reliance on goods and services from the US.

Furthermore, contractors working on ongoing projects will now be expected to report on and minimize the use of American products, and future government capital projects have been halted. Even though liquor stores can't buy new alcohol made in the US, they may keep selling the alcohol they already have to keep things running smoothly.

Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan has also been told to buy $43 million worth of VLTs and slot machines from non-US suppliers. This shows that the province is even more dedicated to helping Canadian companies.

Premier Moe stressed how important it was to look out for Saskatchewan's best interests by saying, "Our exports help millions of Americans afford to live and keep jobs going on both sides of the border." We want to end these tariffs and other forms of retaliation as soon as possible so that we can get back to our long-standing, mutually useful relationship.

The government is also urging school districts, municipalities, and postsecondary institutions to implement comparable procurement policies that emphasize Canadian goods and services. These steps show that Saskatchewan is always working to protect its economy, jobs, and people who live there, while also supporting fair trade.

This firm action sends a strong message: Saskatchewan will not back down when its economy and people are threatened. The province remains committed to building a robust, resilient economy and providing a prosperous future for all of it's residents.
